6 Things HubSpot Starter Doesn't Include — And Why It Matters
Quick Navigation
HubSpot’s Starter plan is priced to look accessible — $15 to $20 per month per seat depending on the Hub. For a growing business that needs to manage customer relationships, it sounds like a reasonable entry point.
The problem is what it leaves out. Six capabilities that most businesses consider fundamental to running a modern marketing or sales operation are either absent or severely restricted on Starter. You only discover this after signing up.
Here is what the plan does not include.
1. Multi-Step Automated Workflows
On HubSpot Starter, you can set up “simple automation” — a single trigger and up to 10 automated actions. That means: form submitted → send one email. It does not mean: customer joins loyalty programme → send onboarding email → wait 3 days → check engagement → send follow-up → notify sales team.
Multi-step, branching workflows — the kind that actually replace manual work — are locked to Marketing Hub Professional at $800/month.
With Caramel: Full multi-step, omnichannel customer journeys are available from the start. No tier gates.
2. Automated Sales Sequences
HubSpot’s Sequences — timed, automated follow-up emails for sales outreach — are a Sales Hub Professional feature. On Starter, your sales team writes and sends follow-ups manually.
For any team doing consistent outbound outreach or post-demo follow-up, this limitation means significant time lost to repetitive manual tasks.
With Caramel: AI-driven engagement sequences run autonomously across Email, WhatsApp, and SMS — without a human sending each message.
3. Native SMS
HubSpot has no SMS capability on Starter. Native SMS requires Marketing Hub Professional ($800/month) plus a $75/month add-on — and even then, it is limited to US and Canadian phone numbers.
If you are a business outside North America, HubSpot’s native SMS is not available to you at any price point.
With Caramel: SMS and WhatsApp are included as native channels from day one, available globally, and covered under GDPR.
4. A/B Testing
Split testing of emails, landing pages, or CTAs is a Professional-tier feature. On Starter, you cannot test which subject line, message, or offer performs better. Every campaign is sent without the ability to optimise through testing.
With Caramel: Campaign performance is continuously optimised by the AI agent — learning what resonates with each customer segment and adapting automatically.
5. Custom Reporting Dashboards
HubSpot Starter gives you access to standard pre-built reports. If you want a custom dashboard — specific KPIs, cross-object reporting, revenue attribution — that is a Professional feature.
For a business that needs to understand which campaigns are driving revenue rather than just opens, this gap is significant.
With Caramel: Natural language analytics lets you ask any business question in plain language and get an instant answer. No custom report builder required. No SQL.
6. GDPR-Ready Consent Management at Scale
HubSpot offers basic GDPR tools across all plans, but managing consent at scale — tracking opt-in sources, managing data subject requests, maintaining audit trails — becomes complex and requires careful manual configuration.
For EU-based businesses, the additional concern is that HubSpot processes and stores data on US-based servers, which introduces data residency considerations under GDPR.
With Caramel: First-party data capture, consent tracking, and GDPR compliance are built into the platform architecture — not added on as a configuration challenge.
