HubSpot SMS: 5 Limitations That Make It Unusable Outside North America

HubSpot SMS: 5 Limitations That Make It Unusable Outside North America

SMS has some of the highest open rates in marketing — consistently above 90%, with most messages read within three minutes of receipt. For B2C businesses, it is one of the most direct and effective channels available.

HubSpot added native SMS functionality in 2023. On paper, this is welcome news. In practice, five limitations make it an unusable choice for most businesses outside the United States.

1. It Only Works for US and Canadian Numbers

HubSpot’s native SMS is available exclusively for sending to phone numbers in the United States and Canada. If your customers are in the UK, France, Australia, the UAE, Brazil, or anywhere outside North America, you cannot use it.

This is not a small caveat. It is a complete exclusion of the majority of the world’s B2C businesses. If you are based in Europe or operate across multiple markets, HubSpot’s native SMS is not an option — at any price.

2. It Is Only Available on Professional and Enterprise Plans

Even if you are in a supported market, native SMS requires Marketing Hub Professional — the $800/month tier. It is not available on Free or Starter plans.

That means the entry cost to use SMS on HubSpot is not $75/month. It is $875/month minimum ($800 for Professional + $75 for the SMS add-on). For a small or mid-size B2C business, this is a significant commitment for a single channel.

3. It Costs an Additional $75/Month on Top of Your Plan

The SMS capability is a paid add-on, not included in the Professional plan price. The base package at $75/month includes 1,000 message segments.

A segment is 160 characters. Any SMS message longer than 160 characters is split into multiple segments, each counting against your quota. A 320-character message costs 2 segments. A 480-character message costs 3. A modest campaign sending 500 messages of average length can consume your monthly allocation within a single send.

4. No WhatsApp Integration — The Channel Your Customers Actually Use

In most of the world, WhatsApp is the dominant messaging channel. In Europe, the Middle East, Latin America, and large parts of Asia, customers are far more likely to respond to a WhatsApp message than an SMS.

HubSpot does not offer native WhatsApp as a marketing channel. There are third-party integrations in the marketplace, but they introduce additional cost, additional vendors, and additional complexity — and none of them are fully native.

With Caramel: WhatsApp Business API is a native channel. Campaigns, automated journeys, and one-to-one conversations all run through WhatsApp alongside SMS, Email, and Push — from a single platform, globally.

5. GDPR Compliance for SMS Requires Extra Configuration

Sending SMS to EU contacts under GDPR requires explicit, documented consent — separate from email consent. HubSpot does not manage SMS consent natively in a way that satisfies the distinct opt-in requirement for text messaging under GDPR. Consent tracking, proof of opt-in, and right-to-erasure for SMS data require manual configuration and ongoing attention.

For EU businesses, this is a compliance risk that needs to be addressed — and HubSpot does not remove it, even at the Professional tier.
