How to Verify Your WhatsApp Business Account and Why It Matters for Open Rates

How to Verify Your WhatsApp Business Account and Why It Matters for Open Rates

When a customer receives a WhatsApp message from a business, two things determine whether they open it: recognition and trust. A message from a number showing only digits, with no business name and no verification badge, triggers the same suspicion as an unknown caller. A message from a verified business account — showing the company name, logo, description, and the blue tick — arrives with immediate legitimacy.

The verification badge on WhatsApp is called an Official Business Account (OBA) designation. It is different from basic business verification (which any business can complete) and represents the highest trust tier Meta offers on the platform. Understanding the difference and the path to OBA status is important for any business serious about WhatsApp as a customer communication channel.

The Three Account Tiers

Tier 1 — Unverified business number: A phone number registered with the WhatsApp Business API but without any Meta Business verification. Messages show only the phone number — no business name, no profile information. Recipients have no way of confirming who the sender is.

Tier 2 — Meta Business Verified: The business has completed Meta’s business verification process — uploading legal business documentation and having it reviewed by Meta. The display name (the business name) shows in WhatsApp instead of just the number. No blue tick, but the business name provides basic recognition. This is the minimum standard for professional WhatsApp business communication.

Tier 3 — Official Business Account (Blue Tick): The highest tier. Meta has independently verified that the account belongs to an authentic, notable business. The blue tick appears next to the business name in all conversations. This status cannot be applied for directly — it is granted by Meta based on the business’s public profile, size, and authenticity signals.

How to Complete Meta Business Verification (Tier 2)

Meta Business Verification is the prerequisite for professional WhatsApp operation. Without it, the business name does not display and messaging tiers above Tier 1 are inaccessible.

Step 1: Access Meta Business Manager (business.facebook.com) and navigate to Business Settings > Security Centre.

Step 2: Click “Start Verification” and select the country where the business is registered.

Step 3: Enter the business’s legal name, registered address, and phone number exactly as they appear on official business documents.

Step 4: Choose a verification method. Meta offers:

  • Domain verification (adding a DNS record to a domain you own — fastest method)
  • Phone call verification (receiving an automated code call at the registered number)
  • Email verification (receiving a code at an email on the registered domain)
  • Document upload (submitting official business registration documents — slowest, used when other methods are unavailable)

Step 5: Complete the verification. Domain verification typically takes minutes. Document review can take 5–10 business days.

Once verified, the business display name on WhatsApp is activated. Any WhatsApp Business API number associated with that Meta Business Manager account can use the verified display name.

Why the Blue Tick Matters Beyond Cosmetics

The OBA blue tick affects more than open rates. Three operational benefits make it commercially significant:

Higher messaging tier access: While messaging tiers are primarily determined by quality rating, OBA status provides faster tier progression and higher effective limits for businesses sending at scale.

Reduced friction for new contacts: When a customer receives a first message from an OBA, they see an established business profile — name, category, website, description, and the blue tick. This context converts first-message recipients at higher rates than unverified contacts receiving an unknown number message.

Media coverage and brand validation: For consumer-facing brands, OBA status signals that Meta has independently validated the business’s authenticity. This is publicly visible to every customer the business contacts — a persistent trust signal that requires no additional marketing investment.

How to increase the likelihood of OBA designation:

Meta does not publish explicit criteria for OBA, but the businesses that receive it typically share these characteristics:

  • Registered brand with clear online presence (website, social profiles, press coverage)
  • Meta Business Manager fully completed with accurate business information
  • WhatsApp API number operating at High quality rating for 60+ days
  • No recent policy violations or ad account restrictions
  • Business category is not in a restricted or sensitive sector
  • Significant volume of initiated conversations (not just outbound broadcasts)

OBA is not available to individual freelancers or very small local businesses — it is designed for brands with enough public profile for Meta to independently verify authenticity.
